HBO’s New Show Is About A World Where The South Won The Civil War

With HBO’s most popular show, Game of Thrones, coming to an end and Westworld on hiatus, it was only a matter of time until the network made another series.

The channel has recently announced the premise of their latest show, Confederate, a Civil War drama. Here’s the exact press statement from HBO themselves:

Confederate chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone-freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.”

Confederate is created by the same minds behind Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, but little else is known about the upcoming series. The men have stated that they originally planned for Confederate to be a film, but decided to turn it into a full-blown series after their experience on Game of Thrones.

I must admit, I personally find the premise interesting, albeit not wildly original. The Man in the High Castle (anamazing show for anyone who hasn’t heard of it) has the same “alternate history” plot, but is focused on World War II as opposed to the Civil War.

It’ll be interesting how this show will handle race, after all, this wouldn’t be the first time HBO has received backlash about how it represents people of color. It’s already begun to receive some backlash for being “slavery fanfiction” before it even airs.

I’m personally going to watch the show before I call it racist, but until then we can only hope that Benioff and Weiss learn from their prior mistakes and don’t reduce all POC roles to slaves.
